Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical and vibrant New York City of the mid-20th century, this oddball romantic musical comedy soars with the spirit of Broadway as it introduces us to a vivid and eccentric world in which all men seem to be “on the make” as gamblers or gangsters and all women are “dolls.”
It all begins with a bet. Desperate to find money to pay for his floating crap game, gambler Nathan Detroit bets high-roller Sky Masterson $1,000 that Sky cannot persuade Save-a-Soul Missionary Sister Sarah Brown to accompany him on a trip to Cuba. While the worldly Sky works his charms on a wary Sarah, Nathan is doing his best to stay outside the matrimonial clutches of his long-suffering fiancé of 14 years, Miss Adelaide. Meanwhile, Sky ends up falling in love with Sarah and tries to reform his gambling ways. He bets all the members of the floating crap game that if he wins his roll of the dice, they will all have to go to the Salvation Army and repent. If he loses, he will give them each $1,000. Needless to say, there is a happy ending for all.
